Entertaining Must Have: Hobnob Popup Party Bins

0

Just spotted these today and put them down on my “must have” list for our holiday party next week.

The bins are modern trash and recycle bins for parties and gatherings.  Perfect to use and then fold up once the party is over!  I love that you can reuse the cardboard too!  You can buy them here on Etsy.

What do you think? Should I get it or should we just use our standard recycling container for our party?  Keep in mind that it’s small and we’ll have to empty it at least once during our party.

Christmas Corner 2011

0

This weekend I did my Christmas decorating a little early.  I put up most of our Christmas decorations, except for the tree.  James wasn’t sold on the idea of doing it before Thanksgiving so I had to do all the decorating without holiday music playing in the background!  That’s okay though, because we’ll make up for it when we put up the tree! :) I thought I’d share some photos of my progress to date:

Here’s our floating shelf that serves as a faux mantel during the month of December
Here’s a closer shot of the goodies

This is for all intents and purposes the “snowflake hallway.”  I noticed that our hallway paint color was similar to that of the foil snowflakes–and that’s where I got the idea to make the snowflake hallway.  There are more hanging there, I just wasn’t able to get a good shot of it this morning.

And last but not least, the Christmas tree branch.  I bought the branch at Crate and Barrel for $20–best purchase ever!  This is a great way for people to decorate in small spaces and for those that don’t want to get a full blown 5 foot tree.

So that’s our decor to date. After Thanksgiving I’ll put out more, but I thought I’d share a little teaser beforehand. Have you started decorating yet?  When do put up your holiday decorations?

Home Accessories: Laundry Room

0

Day 4 of the Home Accessories blog series brings us to the laundry room.  Full disclosure, I don’t have a laundry room because we live in a one-bedroom apartment, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have ideas and suggestions about the laundry room.  I dream of one day having a laundry room–is that a little sad?  Maybe. But, with all my day-dreaming of laundry rooms I think it’ll end up being one of the world’s best and most organized laundry rooms. Here are my thoughts…

 Shelving, Baskets & Counter Space
All of these things are high on the list.  I want shelves to hide things, baskets to make things organized, and enough counter space that I’m not folding laundry on the floor (like I am now).
Feature Wall
Now, this is the best accessory of all.  I love the look of a faux-stone wall in the laundry room. Some might say it’s a waste to put a feature wall in the laundry room.  I say, if you put the feature wall in there, I’ll stop complaining about doing laundry.

Make it a little Rustic

I think it’s always nice to remind yourself just how far we’ve come with regard to washing clothes.  My mom used to hang an old washboard in her laundry room as wall art.  Whether its an old washboard, a weathered tin that says “lye” or a weathered steel tub, all of them are great pieces to incorporate into your laundry room to make you appreciate technology just a bit more!

 Leave a Message
As families expand and more people do the chore of laundry, I think adding a message board to the room is a great feature.  Just think, you could leave instructions on how to wash special items, put a list of general laundry Do’s and Dont’s up, or leave a message letting your family know who is doing laundry when!  I know that last one is unrealistic, but this is my fantasy so don’t burst my bubble.

Make it Martha-like
Martha Stewart and laundry are a match made in heaven.  That’s why I think it’s only fitting to channel Martha in one’s laundry room.  So that it was I suggest working in the color of light blue somewhere.  It’s her signature color people!  Doesn’t everyone know that?  I love how there are five bottles of blue stuff in the photo below. Do you think they ever use that?  No, of course not!  It’s all for appearances.  But you have to admit it looks nice.  Sometimes it’s okay to make things look nice, even if they don’t serve a purpose or aren’t allowed to be used.

Dash and Albert Rug
I’ll end with this: every laundry room needs a Dash & Albert rug. Period. It’s just required.  :)

Home Accessories: Bedroom

0

Ahhhh the bedroom, my favorite room!  The room that I have spent the most time researching products for.  Let me explain.  I think one’s bedroom should be the most comfortable and relaxing retreat spot in the home.  Sure, you spend a lot of time in the living room, but you spend each night fast asleep on your bed. That time adds up people.  That is why I’ve researched and tested everything from pillows, to blankets, to mattress inserts in order to find the most perfect bedding combo known to mankind.  Here’s my list of necessary bedroom accessories:

Overfilled Down-on-top Featherbed

Throw Pillows

Don’t go overboard, but adding 1-2 throw pillows can take your bed from dull to interesting.

Target Room Essentials Jersey Sheet Set

Booklight

If you share a bed with a spouse or partner, you’ll agree that this is a must have

Flannel Duvet Set

Now that winter is nearing, switch over your bedding to flannel

Ralph Lauren and/or Eddie Bauer Pillows

Himalayan Trading Post Candles

These are my new favorite—I just love the glass candle holder!

Crate & Barrel Sedona Hamper

I opt for a more stylish hamper instead of the standard plastic ones.

Home Accessories: Kitchen

In the second installment of the home accessories week we shall take a look at the kitchen.  This, I’ll admit is a hard one to narrow.  First, let me preface that the kitchen accessories will not focus on gadgets because I feel everyone has different cooking abilities and therefore it is a personal choice which gadgets you do and don’t buy.  This post will focus on the unique decor pieces that can be incorporated to help organize and inspire your kitchen.

To start, if you are a cooking beginner, intermediate, or aficionado, you must put up a print of Julie Child in your kitchen.  I have to admit that it’s a source of inspiration on nights when I don’t feel like cooking.  Just looking at the photo cheers me up and gives me an added boost of energy to get the job done.

Every cook needs a little extra flare…why not have one of these draped over your shoulder as you put together one of your delicious concoctions?

Cute or Manly Apron (whichever you prefer)
I’d love to wear this Anthropologie Tea-And-Crumpets Apron.  And James could wear this Oktoberfest one.
Accent Piece

There are no rules here, except find something large and make it an accent piece in the room.  The easiest way to do this is with color.  If it’s an island, add color to it.  If it’s a number of accessories placed throughout the kitchen, make them coordinate.  If you want to dress up your table, make a fun place setting. The world is your oyster on this one!

Showcase Your Bar

If you own drinkware I think you should show it.  Not only is it a space saver, but it’s an easy clue for people to go there and self-serve if you’re busy cooking in the kitchen.  We bought the Pottery Barn Holman Series and love them oh so dearly.  If you like the look but don’t want to pay full price, I suggest stopping by the closest PB Outlet store and picking one up for a fraction of the listing price.

Have at least one gadget on display
Last but not least, everyone should have at least one kitchen gadget that they can show off.  It’s not about braggers rights, it’s about sharing fun and new tools that make things easier for everyone.  Whether it’s a wall-mounted bottle opener, a milk frother, or your beautiful new Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer (ahem…James are you reading this? Christmas and our Anniversary are just around the corner…just sayin’…)  the tools are worth showing off.
